Representational notation is subverted
in Nick Mauss’ second solo show at 303 gallery, “The Desire For the Possibility
of New Images.” Mauss, born in the
United States and raised in Germany, presents images and notations rendered on
flat surfaces that have been bent and torqued into different configurations scattered
throughout the gallery. Resembling torn
out pages from a super-human sized notebook, the discarded sheaf is littered
across the gallery floor as cast-off thoughts from an ongoing conceptual
process. Made from images and drawings that have been silkscreened onto
aluminum, the painting, drawing and texts tentatively define the fruition of an
artist’s thinking. Graphic impulses are rendered subtly on ceramic tiles, adding
soft shades of red and pink to an otherwise grey palette. Mauss, who will be
participating in the 2012 Whitney Biennial, operates in the intersection of
painting and sculpture, plane and ellipse, veiled and known. Despite the solidity
of the materials, Mauss’ effervescent work takes hold sprightly in the mind.
