Joanne Greenbaum ‘1612’ D’Amelio Terras

An eclectic and bracing bit of painting is shown by Joanne Greenbaum with her small works exhibition, ‘1612’ currently at D’Amelio Terras. A mid-career artist with a track record of making spatially challenging images with roots in both architecture and automatism, her 16 x 12 inch paintings display an increase of frenetic energy from her larger images. Doodles made in mixed media scatter, splash and jostle across limited pictorial real estate. Hung in salon style arrangement, with some corners touching, the display mirrors the scattershot, heterogeneous quality of the paintings themselves. Given the size and freshness of the images, ‘1612’ acts as a glimpse into the studio methods of this artist. Notational in quality, Greenbaum’s small paintings—bright and piquant—hold their own against paintings purporting grander gravitas.
